Rapides-des-Joachims, Quebec, often simply called “Des Joachims” or “Swisha” by locals, is a unique and remote community located along the Ottawa River, near the border with Ontario. Established in the 19th century, this small village is historically tied to the logging industry, with its location near the powerful rapids making it a key site for timber transport. Unlike the more agricultural or administrative centers in the Pontiac, Rapides-des-Joachims has always been closely connected to the river, which shaped both its economy and its way of life.
The village’s isolation has fostered a strong sense of community among its residents, who have long relied on each other in this rugged, natural environment. Today, Rapides-des-Joachims remains a quiet, close-knit community, where the legacy of its logging past is still visible in the surrounding forests and waterways.
